· Replacement Retaining Ring - RRR 3-20
· (Patent No. 10/378,080)
· Designed by QED Systems, Inc.

A common problem experienced in the fleet is water tight deck drain closures not functioning properly. Damage control fittings that cannot be set properly pose a potentially catastrophic problem. Some of the common problems are damaged screw heads / damaged screw threads or deck drain securing taps are broken which prevents not only removal of assemble for maintenance but can prevent securing the deck drain.

With limited success, drilling out damaged screws can lead to damaging the strainer or deck drain tabs. The alternative is to have the deck drain replaced, which is costly.

With the RRR 3-20 replacement retaining ring you can restore your deck drains back to operational condition in less than thirty minutes.

Replacement Procedures:

1. Remove valve stem assemblyfrom strainer using a T-Wrench.

2. To disassemble baffle fromstrainer, remove the (4) 10 –24 X ¼”long slotted round head screws.

1.Prior to the removal of remaining tabs, place cap over drain stem to avoid foreignmaterial from falling into the drain pipingsystem.

2. Using a jigsaw remove remaining tabs.

3.All tabs are removed.

4. Ensure the tabs are flush with the entercasing, using a burr if required.

1.Upon completion of burring tabs flush with inner casing place RRR 3-20 into deck drain.

Note: If RRR 3-20 does not sit snug without usingany type of tool, burr high areas, try again.

DO NOT FORCE THE RRR 3-20 INTO PLACE USING ANY TOOL FORCE

1.RRR 3-20 is held in place using (3) 1/4-20 X3/8”stainless steel self locking flat point set screws.

Note: Do not deviate from this type of set screw.

2.Place set screws into the three areas as shown. Tighten set screws until back side of set screw is flush with outer edge of ring.

The RRR 3-20 requires a modified strainer.

Note: Existing strainers will not work with the RRR 3-20.

1.Secure baffle to manifold strainer using (4) 10-24 X 1/4”stainless steel slotted round head screws.

2.Install valve stem assembly.

3.Install strainer assembly into the deck drain.

1.Secure strainer assembly using (4) 1/4 -20 X 1/2”stainless steel flat head screws.

2.Deck drain is ready for operational use.

1.During assessment or PMS, if screw slots are damaged or attempting to removescrews by drilling is unsuccessful, you can remove the complete strainer assembly by using a deck drain puller. (Similar to the one above)

1. With T-wrench close valve stem until it seats. (Set condition zebra)

2. Place cover over deck drain.

3. Thread jacking nut onto jacking bolt roughly 4-1/2”up from the bottom.

4. Place jacking bolt into cover, thread jacking bolt into deck drain strainer.

5. Once threaded into strainer turn jacking nut until strainer is completely removed.

1. Occasionally you may not be able to thread the jacking bolt into the valve stem.

2. The solution is to purchase an ACME tap, to re-tap the existing threads.
